When Akeel Morris stepped onto his farm to share his story, he spoke simply and honestly about the work he loves.

Meet Akeel Morris of M-Farms

Akeel Morris is the farmer and entrepreneur behind M-Farms, where he grows a variety of local produce.

At the time of filming, the farm was producing:

• Sweet potatoes
• Cucumbers
• Hot peppers
• Sweet peppers

For Akeel, however, farming is about much more than crops. It gives him a deep sense of peace and the opportunity to do something meaningful for others.

“What I like about agriculture is the peace that it provides and the fact that I am able to feed people,” he shared.

Knowing that something he has grown can become a meal for another person is one of the most rewarding parts of the work.

“It’s heartwarming, for lack of a better word, to know that you could provide food for someone to eat. I think that’s the most joy in farming for me.”

Finding Peace and Purpose on the Farm

Most days, Akeel works alone.

From the moment he arrives at M-Farms, his attention turns fully to the work ahead. Yet even with the demands of farming, the natural environment creates a calm that can be difficult to find elsewhere.

“The wind is blowing, the sun is out, sometimes the rain is falling, and you can hear birds in the background,” he explained. “It brings a sense of peace I don’t even know how to explain.”

There is also something remarkable about seeing a crop develop from the earth into food that can nourish a family.

As Akeel put it, transforming what begins in the soil into something people can eat is a “crazy phenomenon.”

That combination of peace, purpose and service keeps him connected to the work—even when the journey becomes difficult.

Why Supporting Barbadian Farmers Matters

Akeel believes farmers will play an essential role in Barbados’ future—not only socially, but economically as well.

He spoke passionately about the country’s dependence on imported food, questioning why a tropical nation capable of growing produce throughout much of the year should rely so heavily on imports.

“There’s no reason that we should have to be importing so much food,” he said.

For Akeel, supporting agriculture is also about having greater confidence in where our food comes from and how it is produced.

His call is clear: Barbados must get behind its farmers.

That support should extend across the entire agricultural sector, from people managing small plots to those operating the country’s largest farms. Every farmer contributes to greater local food production, stronger communities and a more resilient Barbados.

The Reality Behind Entrepreneurship

While Akeel’s journey is inspiring, he is careful not to romanticise entrepreneurship.

His advice to anyone thinking about starting a business is to learn as much as possible before taking the leap—particularly from people already working in the industry.

“Seek some knowledge behind it first, as much as you can,” he advised. “Especially from people who are actually inside the industry, so that you could see where it is you could potentially be going and if this is something that you truly want to do.”

Entrepreneurship is often presented as an exciting path to freedom and success, but Akeel reminds aspiring business owners that poor decisions can have serious, long-term consequences.

“We like to glorify entrepreneurship, but if you do entrepreneurship wrong, you could end up in a pickle—a real serious pickle.”

His message is not intended to discourage anyone. Instead, it encourages future entrepreneurs to enter business with preparation, realistic expectations and a willingness to learn.

Determination, Resilience and a Clear Vision

Building a business in Barbados is not easy.

According to Akeel, entrepreneurship demands determination, resilience and the ability to recover when things do not go according to plan.

“It does take a lot of being able to brush off things to keep moving forward,” he said. “Because in Barbados, it’s a fight really to get from here to here.”

Still, he believes a strong vision is worth pursuing.

“If you have a vision in mind and you want to see it come to life, get up and work on it.”
